The Mechs Are Coming

The concept of Mechs, giant, man-carrying robot suits, has been around for decades, but now researchers are in the development stages of making this a reality. Activelink, a company that develops new ways to link people and machines by using Power assist technology, has produced a prototype exoskeleton called the Assist Suit AWN-03, which is being developed as a solution to labor shortages that might arise due to an ageing population, since hoists and forklifts are not suitable for every situation. “There are some particular fields that cannot be mechanized, and industrial workers will still need to carry heavy objects by themselves,” said...

Oldest Known Music In The Universe Just Released

Some of the oldest music in the Universe has just been  released for the first time by a team of researchers of a group of stars up to 13 billion years old. Led by Andrea Miglio from the University of Birmingham in the UK, he and his colleagues used data from NASA’s Kepler missions to measure stars in the Milky Way’s M4 cluster, and by using an audio technique known as asteroseismology, it measures the oscillations of distant stars, which can then be converted into sound. The team explained that the sound is ‘trapped’ inside the stars, which is what makes them...

The Large Balloon Reflector Being Set Up For Launch

A new technology which aims to raise a telescope directly into space, nestled inside a balloon the size of a football field, has been in the works in 2014 but is now becoming a reality. Christopher Walker, an astronomy professor and professor of optical sciences and electrical engineering at the University of Arizona, won Phase 2 funding from the program two years ago and is now seeing his concept come to life. The large balloon reflector, as Walker named it, consist of an inflatable, half-aluminized spherical reflector inside a much larger stratospheric balloon. The outer balloon would also act as protection for the...

Wormholes, and Black Holes And Einstein, Oh My!

According to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, at the center of a black hole lies a point at which the forces of gravity are at their most intense, and time and space effectively end and based on that theory, if an object approaches the event horizon, it would be crushed in one direction, and stretched in another. However, new research suggests that may not be the case, after all. Now, a team of physists at the University of Lisbon in Portugal, have modeled what would happen to different objects, if each one ended up inside the spherical wormhole of a black hole. Team...

Safeguarding Against Artificial Intelligence

Author of “Superintelligence,” Nick Bostrom, a Swedish philosopher at the University of Oxford and founder of the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies says that “when A.I. teaches itself how to learn without supervision, it will be able to learn so fast that it would overrule humanity and take over.”, a concept first coined as ‘Singularity’ by mathematician Stanislaw Ulam 1958. Now, the scientists who build the A.I. algorithms need to install an “interruption policy” that would “forcibly change the behavior of the agent itself.” This signal would convince the machine, that at this point would be ignoring human commands, that it should stop and...

Dark Thirty Radio – June 10th, 2016

Tonight on Dark Thirty Radio NASA Is Going With “Space Dandruff” To Explain UFO’s Sightings Former NASA employee James Oberg says UFO sightings can all be explained by a phenomenon known as “space dandruff’. Oberg claims all sightings can be explained as ice crystals, insulation, debris and other tiny pieces of space stuff that were once on the spacecraft and are now floating in front of cameras and windows. Since they’re so tiny and moving between sunlight and shadows, they can’t be conclusively identified, but he is certain they’re “space dandruff.” Oberg says he’s not trying to say UFOs don’t exist, just...

Secret Army Experiment Caught On Film

A 16 year boy, from West Sussex, captured footage of what appears to be a mysterious figure, flying hundreds of feet above the ground. Charlie Knott says he was with at a friend’s house, when they both looked up to this floating image, which he claims was a man, right above them. Knott says “We both ran outside and were just looking at it and wondering what it was. Then I ran back inside to get my phone to take pictures and video. It was like the figure of a person and it looked like it was on a board which was...

Reseachers Use Minecraft To Test Artifical Intelligence

Behavioral psychologists have begun using mazes to study memory and learning in artificial intelligence. Junhyuk Oh and colleagues at the University of Michigan have begun experimenting with artificial intelligence machines by using mazes constructed in the 3D world of Minecraft. Oh and his team have created a set of mazes in which they set their AI algorithms increasingly complex tasks, ensuring that there is not always a clean line of site to the blocks and that the algorithm must coördinate its movement and vision to explore. The team says the best performing AI system uses deep reinforcement learning enhanced with additional memory,...

Brain To Brain Communication Now A Reality

An incredible new breakthrough is being perfected, as researcher have now confirmed brain to brain communication is possible. Getting its start in 1998, Miguel Nicolelis, a Brazilian researcher working at Duke University, started experimenting with the brains of rats, measuring the electrical output of a single neuron at a time, and in recording the information, discovered that to make their bodies move. Then moving up to the evolutionary ladder, trained monkeys to play a video game using a joystick, and found that after having recorded the brain patterns that resulted from the movement, the team took the joystick away and the...

Dark Thirty Radio – June 9th, 2016

Tonight On Dark Thirty Radio  Is The Universe Just One Mass Graveyard? Although roughly 8.8 billion habitable, Earth-size planets exist in our galaxy, we have yet to discover any other trace of extra terrestrial beings and a new study suggests that that is because they have all since died. Co-authors Aditya Chopra and Charley Lineweaver of the Australian National University based their study on the assumption they had barely had time to evolve stating “We argue that early extinction could be the cosmic default for life in the universe,” and even go so far as to speculate that they never lived...

Big News To Be Officially Announced In September By Elon Musk

Although many details still remain shrouded in mystery, CEO of SpaceX and co-founder of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk has hinted that he will conducting a series of missions starting in 2018,  leading up to the first crewed mission to the Mars by 2024. In an on-stage interview at the Code Conference, Musk confirmed that he would announce his architecture for human missions to Mars in September at the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico. “The basic game plan is that we’re going to send a mission to Mars with every Mars opportunity from 2018 onwards,” Musk said. “The launches will...

The Mapping Of Jupiter

Astronomers have now been able to observe the wavelengths of radio waves coming through Jupiter’s atmosphere, allowing them to gather enough detail to map the ammonia flows that lay beneath. A  team, led by astronomer Imke de Pater from the University of California, Berkeley are working with the Very Large Array, radio telescope located in New Mexico to penetrate roughly 60 miles into the planet’s atmosphere. Team member Robert Sault, from the University of Melbourne in Australia explained “Jupiter’s rotation once every 10 hours usually blurs radio maps, because these maps take many hours to observe, but we have developed...
